Omega Sektor Closes
Our first gaming trip, a tour of Omega Sektor followed by 10 hours of gaming was a great success! Just over thirty people showed up over the course of the day, and everyone seemed to have fun, with a few folks staying on until they got kicked out at the end of the night...
...the next day, Omega Sektor closed their doors and declared that they were in administration (leaving behind a large pile of Kit-Kats in the internet cafe area). Now, I'm not saying this is the fault of any CompSoc member but, guys, if I find out one of you stole £330,000 from them, I'll be very annoyed.
Clearly our sponsorship deal with them isn't going to be too profitable from now on, but at least you now have a talking point when someone notices your CompSoc t-shirt. We'll do our best to reschedule and re-plan things so that all the gamers in the society don't miss out on anything, keep stopping by the forums for updates.
Xx
Welcome Freshers!
A new year, new faces, new games, new technologies...same CompSoc spirit. You've already shown some kind of interest in technology by managing to use the Internet to get here, so I'd strongly advise you head over to the forums and say hi
If you're still a bit unsure, have a look at what we get up to, our plans for the year, or come and find us at the Freshers' Fair (Sunday 5th October) and have a chat.
Sponsorship
This year we're happy to announce that we've agreed a sponsorship deal with IBM. In addition to supplying some funds to finance our gaming sessions, geeky projects (anyone fancy building an aerial?), and trips to exciting places, they're also going to put putting on some events themselves - giving help with placements/graduate jobs and showing off some technology you might not find within the University.
If there's anything you'd really like to see us do with IBM, then let us know - they're very amenable to new ideas.
We also have our usual deal with Microsoft, whereby they'll supply some free stuff, put on a couple of events and give a couple of talks, in return for us doing a bit of publicity. We'll be helping out with the Java Support Office in the University too, which is a great way to cement your understanding, and looks great on your CV. If you're interested in helping out with any of the Microsoft or Java Support stuff, then please go and say so on the forums.
Finally, we've reached an agreement with Omega Sektor (one of the biggest gaming centres in Europe) for discounted LAN parties and play-time for members. They'll be present at the Freshers' Fair, and are offering a tour and free gaming day on Wednesday 8th October. Go sign up for that here if you're interested.
Face Book
Some enterprising young soul has come up with one of these modern 'Face Book' pages for our society. Apparently if you 'join' then you can be 'invited' to events and other such internet magic. Seems a bit preposterous to me, but if it means something to you, then here's the link.
